The Best Wedding Venues in Dumfries and Galloway
A Florist's View of Dumfries and Galloway Weddings
Having delivered wedding flowers across the region for years, I’ve had the privilege of decorating some truly stunning venues. Our corner of Scotland is unique; we have the rugged coastline of the Solway Firth, the lush rolling hills of the Galloway Forest, and history literally built into the stone of our castles.
From a florist's perspective, these venues offer more than just a room—they offer a canvas. Whether you are looking for a grand "flower wall" moment or a simple, wild-gathered aesthetic, here are my favorite venues that truly shine when dressed in blooms.

1. Gretna Green: The Iconic Start
There is a reason Gretna Green remains world-famous. Whether it’s an intimate elopement at the Famous Blacksmiths Shop or a larger celebration at Smiths Hotel, the sense of history is palpable.
- Florist’s Tip: For the historic anvil rooms, I recommend rich, moody palettes—deep reds and forest greens—that complement the dark wood, white walls and heritage atmosphere.

2. Bourock Barn, Lochrutton: Rustic Perfection
If you’re dreaming of a relaxed, "barefoot luxury" vibe, Bourock Barn is a hidden gem. This authentic barn provides a stunning blank slate with its exposed stone walls and wooden beams.
- Florist’s Tip: This venue cries out for "just-picked" wildflower styles. Think suspended floral hoops or greenery garlands wrapped around the pillars to bring the outside in.

3. Castle Douglas Estates: Threave Gardens
The "Food Town" of Castle Douglas is surrounded by incredible private estates, but Threave Garden & Estate (National Trust for Scotland) is a standout for nature lovers. With the Victorian mansion house and the world-class gardens, the backdrop is already half-decorated for you.
- Florist’s Tip: Use seasonal Scottish blooms here. In spring, Narcissus and Tulips mimic the estate’s own display; in late summer, Dahlias from the local area look spectacular against the manicured lawns.

4. Kinmount House: Timeless Elegance
Located between Dumfries and Gretna, Kinmount House is one of the region's most breathtaking venues. From its glass-walled Orangery to the Italian Garden, it is a dream for high-end floral design.
- Florist’s Tip: The Orangery offers incredible natural light. Large-scale installations—like floral arches or tall, airy centerpieces—work beautifully here without blocking the view of the grounds.

5. Friars Carse: Romantic River Views
Nestled on the banks of the River Nith, Friars Carse is a country house hotel steeped in Robert Burns history. The combination of the woodland setting and the elegant marquee makes it versatile for any season.
- Florist’s Tip: Take inspiration from the riverbank. I love using flowing foliage like Eucalyptus and Willow to mirror the movement of the Nith.
